July 17, 2007--Dealination project update (Orange County Register)

The South Coast Water District Board of Directors heard an updated presentation on the proposed $136 million ocean desalination plant in Dana Point on July 12. The board did not take any action on the project which the Municipal Water District of Orange County has worked on since 2001. MWDOC has given the same presentation to other cities and water districts in Orange County that might be interested in forming a Joint Powers Agency for the project. The project will cost each participating agency between $100,000 and $350,000 per year over the next three years. The actual cost will depend on how many agencies sign on to the project and how much funding the project receives from local, state and federal agencies. The presentation outlined the costs and potential benefits of having a local water source. The MWDOC plant would be located on the SCWD's 30-acre San Juan Creek property and would get its water from wells at Doheny State Beach. The plant would produce 15 million gallons of water per day, which is equivalent to about half the 2025 water needs for Laguna Beach, San Clemente and the South Coast Water District.
