March 12, 2007--Proposal calls for state to monitor wells (Kingman Daily Miner)
A group considering water issues affecting rural Arizona heard a recommendation that new private wells in areas where groundwater is a concern be monitored by the state. The information would help the Arizona Department of Water Resources determine groundwater conditions and give better advice to property owners seeking well permits...Property owners who decide to drill their own wells are mostly in the dark as to whether or not the well will affect other users and how long the water supply will last. Too many wells tapping into the same aquifer could lead some to dry out, a concern in growing rural areas...The Department of Water Resources does not currently collect data on private wells that pump less than 35 gallons per minute. There are approximately 100,000 of these wells, known as exempt wells, in Arizona.
