May 22, 2007--Report `step forward' for Desert Rock (Durango Herald)
Desert Rock Energy Project took a significant step toward construction with the release of a draft Environmental Impact Statement that found nothing to stand in its way...The EIS describes several potential impacts of the power plant to air, water and human health...Desert Rock would cause small increases in mercury and selenium deposits that could reach the San Juan River or Morgan Lake...However, the change in water quality `would be nominal relative to established standards.'...Desert Rock would use nearby coal and water. A surface mine, the proposed Navajo Mine Extension Project, would produce 6.2 million tons of coal per year adjacent to the power plant. Wells would tap the Morrison aquifer for 2,795 gallons of water per minute for 50 consecutive years.
