December 10, 2007--Idaho, Nevada reservoir trout found with elevated mercury levels (Denver Post)
Idaho health officials are urging anglers at reservoirs near the Idaho-Nevada border to limit consumption of rainbow trout caught there after a recent federal study found elevated levels of mercury. Higher-than-normal mercury levels were documented in fish from Lake Billy Shaw, Sheep Creek Reservoir and Mountain View Reservoir on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation that spans the Idaho-Nevada border, as well as the Wildhorse Reservoir, located in northern Nevada. Environmental groups say much of the mercury that arrives in Idaho waterways is borne on the wind from gold mines in northern Nevada. Scientists already have documented mercury contamination elsewhere in the region, including in brown trout from central Idaho's famed Silver Creek.
