January 2, 2008--El Paso leak-detection system surpasses expectations (American Water Works Association)

El Paso Water Utility staff expected to detect water leaks in its distribution system after installing a new high-tech leak detection system. But they didn’t expect the water loss to be so substantial. Since installing 10,000 leak-detection devices―called “loggers”―across the city in 2004 and 2005, the utility has found 591 leaks. By the end of 2006, after repairing those leaks, the total water saved amounted to 725 mil gal (2.7 × 106 m3)—twice as much water as the city golf course uses in one year, said John Balliew, EPWU water systems division manager.
