January 4, 2008--Task force discusses Animas usage (Durango Herald)

A team working to care for the Animas River will be looking at how to balance private boating use with commercial rafting companies during the coming months. At its meeting Thursday, the Animas River Task Force reviewed some initial concepts for Cundiff Park along the river. In one design, the parking lot did not allow room for commercial buses pulling raft trailers to a turnaround, effectively restricting it for private-boater use only.  "Access to the river is a given for Cundiff," city of Durango Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Metz said. "But in the city code, where we have identified river-access points, Cundiff has never been identified as a commercial-access point." Task-force member and Mountain Waters Rafting owner Casey Lynch didn't realize that commercial-rafter access might be an issue.
