January 8, 2008--BLM starts planning for Gateway (Grand Junction Daily Sentinel)
The Grand Junction Bureau of Land Management office is kicking off a recreation planning process for nearly 200,000 acres around Gateway Canyons Resort. The area included in the plan stretches roughly along the Utah state line on the west and the Uncompahgre Plateau on the east, and it includes the Dolores River, Sewemup Mesa, the Palisade, Calamity Mesa, Sinbad Valley, John Brown Canyon and some land near Glade Park. Mesa State College and Arizona State University finished a study in December of how the area is used. The study found: nearly one-third of the people using the area come from Grand Junction; the most popular activity in the area is hiking; and most people who use the area appreciate it for its scenery, solitude and recreation activities.
