January 9, 2008--Utility board looks to future of water (La Junta Tribune Democrat)

"If we have another drought like in 2002 and California has call on the river, we're not going to get any water from the Frying Pan. That's serious, because if we don't get water from the Frying Pan we're not going to have any water," said Chairman Vic Aldea of the La Junta Utilities Board. Aldea suggested that the Board review having a capacity fund that would be set aside for the acquisition of water. The Board discussed building an extra charge into utility rates, but no decisions were reached. Further research will be required so that rates will be compatible with other cities. Raising rates now, when there is not threat of drought, will build up funds in time for the next drought.
