February 9, 2008--Wilder waters ahead: snowpack means big spring runoff (Farmington Daily Times)
Beginning Monday, the Bureau of Reclamation will increase by a lot the amount of water that's released from Navajo Reservoir into the San Juan River. The action is planned to compensate for spring melting of a snowpack that already has reached 169 percent of average in the Colorado mountains to the north. When the snow melts, it will become 1.3 million acre feet of water flowing into Navajo Reservoir. The release will increase per day by about 1,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) so that it will reach 3,000 cfs by Wednesday. The bureau now releases 750 cfs from Navajo Reservoir. "We need to release the necessary volume to manage it and create available storage for the water," said Pat Page, of the Bureau of Reclamation.
