February 8, 2008--Alternative energy sources focus of ag symposium (La Junta Tribune Democrat)
Agricultural producers from up and down the lower Arkansas Valley attended the fourth annual Farm, Water and Ranch Symposium and Trade Show, Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Gobin Building in Rocky Ford. The morning session consisted of three presentations on alternative energy sources. Ravi Malhotra, executive director of International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology (iCast), shared with the audience considerations concerning wind energy. Following Malhotra's presentation, Raphael Shay, outreach coordinator for iCast, demonstrated the process for manufacturing biodiesel. Lynn Hirshman, executive director for Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association (COSEIA), concluded the morning session discussing the benefits of utilizing solar energy. The afternoon session kicked of with Steve Witte, division engineer for Department of Natural Resources, explaining current developments in the ongoing controversy surrounding irrigation water efficiency. Presentations were also made related to research that has been conducted on irrigation efficiency and possible solutions that could be explored.
