February 19, 2008--State works to keep zebra mussels in check (Pueblo Chieftain)

State and federal officials are trying to get a handle on zebra mussels at Lake Pueblo before they get out of hand. A remotely operated underwater camera will be used this week to determine the scope of an infestation of the mussels discovered in November. Divers have been lined up to get samples if large areas of mussels are found. “We’re working to develop a plan that matches the conditions at Lake Pueblo,” Colorado Department of Natural Resources Executive Director Harris Sherman said Monday. “Each female zebra mussel produces 1 million to 4 million larvae in a year, so there is a potential to spread. Each larvae reaches maturity in a year. In other states, it has gone from a few to billions quickly.” The mussels have caused roughly $5 billion of damage in other states. Unlike other freshwater mussels, zebra mussels attach themselves to structures. They are a threat to water pipes, boats and other marine life.
