March 5, 2008--Area snowpack at 155% of average (Durango Herald)
Snowfall in the mountains of southern Colorado - including the Animas, Dolores and San Juan river basins - exceeds its average by more than any other area in the state, according to the Natural Resource Conservation Service. The NRCS considers the Arkansas and Rio Grande river valleys as well as the three basins in Southwest Colorado as the southern tier in its snow readings. Snow levels in Southwest Colorado in February stood at 155 percent of average, the NRCS said. The Rio Grande basin reported 169 percent of average, and the Arkansas basin, 152 percent of average. February marked the third consecutive month of above-average snowfall across the Colorado mountains, the NRCS said.
