March 8, 2008--Dam gates ready to close as Grand Canyon flood nears end (Denver Post)
Workers at the Glen Canyon Dam are preparing to shut off bypass gates that have been pouring billions of extra gallons of water into the Colorado River for the past several days. The release created a manmade flood in the Grand Canyon designed to mimic the natural ones that used to nourish the ecosystem by spreading sediment and building sandbars. The gates at the dam near the Utah-Arizona border were opened on Wednesday. The experiment reached peak output early Thursday and was planned to last 60 hours. Water levels that have risen by 2 feet to 15 feet in the Grand Canyon are expected to gradually subside over the coming days.
