March 19, 2008--Changes pondered for ag rules (Pueblo Chieftain)
Changes to proposed agriculture efficiency rules have been discussed during recent meetings between farmers and the Colorado Division of Water Resources, but a new set of rules has not been written, Water Division 2 Engineer Steve Witte said Wednesday. “There’s no other version of the rules,” Witte said. “That decision hasn’t been made yet.” However, the state is listening to all suggestions that are coming out of meetings, and could modify the rules before they are formally proposed. “A lot of the discussions we’ve had were about achievable efficiencies,” Witte said. He explained that more efficiency can be achieved by using wells for sprinklers than by using ponds to hold the water. “It bears looking into further.” The state also is considering applying presumptive factors rather than requiring engineering on individual wells, Witte said.
