May 5, 2008--Zebra mussels threat closes Antero Reservoir (Pueblo Chieftain)

The Denver Water board has temporarily closed Antero Reservoir to boaters while it works out a strategy to prevent the spread of zebra mussels. While zebra mussels have, so far, been found only in Lake Pueblo within Colorado, the state is taking precautions to prevent the spread of the mussels. No zebra mussels have been found at Antero, which is owned by the Denver Water Board. State Parks nine days ago began inspections of some boats entering Lake Pueblo and all boats leaving that have spent more than 24 hours on the lake last month. In addition, the State House is expected to give final approval today to a bill already passed by the Senate that would provide $7.2 million for the inspection program. The Colorado Water Conservation Board earlier approved $1 million to launch the program and keep it running through June. Shore fishing and other recreation will still be available at Antero, said Neil Sperandeo, manager of recreation for Denver Water.
