The seven-year lawsuit over water flows through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is closer to resolution with parties to the 2001 case reviewing a tentative agreement, officials said Friday, June 6. ‘I am very pleased that we are close to an agreement that appears to protect both Colorado’s water interests and its environmental interests,’ said Harris Sherman, executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. ‘It was truly a team effort and I thank everyone for their efforts.’ The current case started in 2001 when the U.S. Department of Interior filed an application in Colorado Water Court to quantify the federal reserved water right in the Gunnison River as it flows through the national park.
