July 16, 2008--District acting in anticipation of groundwater ruling (Pueblo Chieftain)

A trial that could have the final say on a plan to reduce groundwater pumping in the north-central San Luis Valley won't come until October, but the Rio Grande Water Conservation District is taking some steps in anticipation of the plan's approval. The district's staff is working on a database that would chart the number of farm units, how existing water is used, and the amount of surface water available to subdistricts that can be used to compensate senior surface water users who've been injured by groundwater pumping.
