July 30, 2008--Sand dunes water case in court (Alamosa Valley Courier)
A water trial scheduled for three weeks may last three days instead. District/Water Judge O. John Kuenhold scheduled a three-week trial to begin on Wednesday regarding contested water rights for the Great Sand Dunes National Park. One of the same objectors to the state’s confined aquifer rules case two years ago also opposed the United States’ application for water rights for the dunes national park and preserve. At the onset of trial, however, the objectors led by Attorney Allan Hale reached an agreement with the federal government that would drastically reduce the time in court for both sides - and quite possibly result in a water rights decree for the dunes.
