Historic Mayflower Mill Fueled by Hydropower

The San Juan County Historical Society has spearheaded the restoration of the historic Mayflower Mill on the Animas River in Silverton. Sunnyside Gold Corporation donated the mill to the society in 1998 as part of a $20 million restoration project. It currently operates as a self-guided tour for visitors interested in the area's mining history. Power demands at the mill, however, make for expensive electric bills—as much as $600 per month. Since the mill is open for touring only three days a week, four months of the year, the Society has decided to generate their own hydroelectric power 12 months a year and sell hydro production back to the power supplier.
