June 30, 2009--Analyst says fracing chemicals used in drilling harmful to humans (Durango Herald)
Environmental analyst Theo Colburn presented the chemical issues behind the drilling of natural gas Monday night at Fort Lewis College's Center for Southwest Studies Lyceum. The founder of The Endocrine Disruption Exchange said in the last 20 years the natural-gas business has grown more and more reliant on chemicals that are dangerous to public health. The use of those chemicals is used in the fracturing of rock to release natural gas. She said that although natural-gas companies claim they recover most of the chemicals used in fracturing the rock, many times only a small percentage is recovered, and results are rarely recorded.
