State Purchases Animas-La Plata Project Water

On June 7th Gov. Bill Ritter signed into law House Bill 1250--a construction-projects bill that authorizes the Colorado Water Conservation Board to purchase 10,400 acre-feet of water from the Animas-La Plata Project for $36 million. The state can now sell or lease water to water districts. The state could also keep the water as a hedge against a future legal demand from downstream states, said Jennifer Gimbel, director of the Colorado Water Conservation Board.
