CWCB Funds Update

On February 24th, the Colorado Senate gave preliminary approval to almost $500 million in budget cuts that would balance the state's budget. Spreading the pain has been a constant theme in the Legislature this session, as budget cuts have been the paramount issue before lawmakers trying to overcome a $2.2 billion deficit in this fiscal year and $1.3 billion in the next. Consequently, most of the widespread trims touched every department in the state. Included in the cuts were a $1 million from a higher-education initiative grant and $2 million each from local government gambling impact funds and the Colorado Water Conservancy Board (CWCB). The CWCB funds draw from a pool that was earlier spared, when it was faced with a $25 million cut that was blocked. As Chris Treese with the Colorado River Water Conservation Districted noted, however, “The funds aren’t out-of-the-woods yet. Budget deficits continue into the future.”
