Durango Whitewater Park Upgrades

In the late 1980s the City of Durango became the first community in the nation to construct a whitewater park. The park was state-of-the-art at the time, but has since lost some of its prestige to newer parks. “The question is, how can we bring more whitewater traffic through Durango and exert a beneficial influence on the community?” said Scott Shipley, three-time Olympic paddler and four-time world slalom champion. One solution is to undertake much-needed improvements and upgrades to the park. Therefore, the City is in the process of beginning plans to do just that. They are currently looking for funds to start the long-awaited tune-up to the Animas River’s town run. The City must make significant progress on these improvements by the end of 2013, however, to protect its Recreational In-Channel water rights.  The granting of a RICD water right require permanent grouted structures be in place to control the river flows to provide a reasonable recreation experience.
