September 19, 2007--Farmers weigh pros, cons of Super Ditch (Pueblo Chieftain)

After all the economic and engineering studies are done, there’s one very important group of people who have to be convinced a Super Ditch is the way to keep water in the Arkansas Valley: The farmers who own the water rights. The Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy District has spent more than $500,000 to investigate the ability of farmers in seven ditch systems east of Pueblo to form a land fallowing, water lease management corporation - nicknamed Super Ditch - that would combine resources and improve bargaining power with cities or other potential water purchasers. The Lower Ark board sees it as the best alternative to selling water rights and permanently drying up farm land.
