An amendment to the 2012 Farm Bill would provide more access to grants and loans for rural water projects. U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., sponsored the amendment, which gained unanimous support from the House agriculture committee. The committee passed the 5-year, $500 billion bill 35-11 Thursday, but no decision has been made on full House consideration. It has about $1.2 billion available in loans and grants. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that in order to modernize water infrastructure and be in compliance with clean drinking water standards rural communities would need $80 billion.
