February 10, 2010--Cutthroat trout to get new home in summer (Craig Daily Press)

The protected strain of Colorado River Cutthroat trout will be getting a new home this summer. The Colorado Division of Wildlife will remove other species of trout in a 1.8-mile section of Willow Creek and replace them with a pure strain of Cutthroat trout. The Cutthroat trout is nearly endangered because of the out-competing nature of other trout such as Brook trout, the DOW reported.

A barren, 1.5-mile stretch of Willow Creek greets visitors as they drive into town. The waste rock and tailings pile along the stream are a legacy of the mining industry that made Creede a boomtown at the end of the 19th century and operated in the area until 1985.

September 3, 2008--Nelson Tunnel site added to EPA Superfund priorities (Alamosa Valley Courier)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday added the Nelson Tunnel/Commodore Waste Rock pile near Creede to the National Priorities List (NPL) of Superfund sites. The draining mine adit and waste rock pile are located about one mile north of Creede in Mineral County.

A final Superfund listing for part of the historic mining district north of town is likely in September, but clean up of one of the main pollution sources may take up to three years, according to officials with the Environmental Protection Agency.
